What affects the cost of root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment does not have a single fixed fee. The cost varies because each tooth is different, and the complexity of treatment depends on several factors.

Which tooth needs treatment

Front teeth (anterior) typically have one or two canals and are generally more straightforward to treat. Back teeth (posterior), particularly molars, have three or four canals, sit deeper in the mouth, and are more complex to access. More canals and more difficult access mean more time and a higher fee.

First treatment or retreatment

If a tooth has previously been treated and the root canal has failed, a second procedure is required. Retreatment is more complex than a first treatment. The previous filling material must be removed without damaging the existing tooth structure, the reason for failure is not always immediately obvious, and additional time is needed to thoroughly disinfect and seal the canal system. In some cases, removal of the previous material is not straightforward and may require more than one visit to complete.

Complexity and anatomy

Some teeth have curved, narrow, unusually shaped canals, or an unexpected number of canals. Finding and treating canals in unusual positions takes more time, and in some cases additional imaging is needed. Canal anatomy can only be determined through a proper assessment, and sometimes not fully until treatment is underway.

3D imaging

In most cases at Penn Pacific Dental Center, a cone beam CT scan is taken before or during treatment. This gives a three-dimensional view of the tooth and surrounding bone, which helps identify issues that standard X-rays can miss, including hidden lesions or bone changes that may not yet be causing symptoms. Where this applies to your case, it will be explained and included in your treatment plan.

Use of magnification

At Penn Pacific Dental Center, root canal treatment is performed under a dental operating microscope. This is standard practice at our clinic for all cases, including routine treatments, complex anatomy, and retreatment.

Common questions about root canal costs in Singapore

How much does root canal treatment cost in Singapore?

Fees vary depending on which tooth is involved and whether it is a first treatment or retreatment. At Penn Pacific Dental Center, root canal treatment for anterior teeth starts from $1,000, and for posterior teeth from $1,300. Molar root canal treatment typically starts from $1,600. Retreatment starts from $2,000. These are starting figures. The final fee is confirmed after assessment.

Why does root canal treatment cost more for back teeth?

Back teeth have more canals than front teeth, typically three or four compared to one or two. They also sit deeper in the mouth and are harder to access. More canals and more difficult access mean more time and a higher fee.

Is the crown included in the root canal fee?

No. The root canal fee covers the endodontic procedure only. A crown or restoration is typically recommended afterwards to protect the tooth and is quoted separately. The type of restoration needed depends on how much natural tooth structure remains after treatment.

Can I claim Medisave for root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment is generally not claimable under standard Medisave. However, Penn Pacific Dental Center is a CHAS-accredited clinic. From June 2026, seniors aged 60 and above can use Flexi-Medisave of up to $400 per year for root canal treatment at CHAS-accredited clinics. CHAS Blue, Orange, Merdeka Generation, and Pioneer Generation cardholders may also be eligible for subsidies. Some corporate dental benefit plans including MHC Asia, Alliance Medinet, SODA by DA, and Inova Care may provide partial coverage. WhatsApp us to check what applies to you before your appointment.

Why does root canal retreatment cost more than a first treatment?

Retreatment involves removing the previous root canal filling material before the canals can be cleaned and resealed. This is more technically demanding and takes longer than a first treatment.

Will the cost be confirmed before treatment starts?

Yes. An assessment is done before any treatment begins, and the fee is discussed and agreed before we proceed. There are no surprises after the fact.
