What Do Dental Sealants Do?

Dental sealants are thin protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of molars and premolars, sealing the deep grooves where plaque and food particles can accumulate. Once applied, the coating creates a barrier that keeps bacteria and acid away from the tooth surface, helping reduce the risk of tooth decay in areas that are difficult to clean with brushing alone.

Dental sealants are one part of our broader preventive dental care approach, alongside check-ups, scaling and polishing, and fluoride treatment.

Are Dental Sealants Only for Children?

No. Dental sealants are suitable for anyone prone to cavities, not only children and teenagers. Adults with cavity-free molars can also benefit from dental sealants as a protective, non-invasive alternative to restorative treatment, particularly if their back teeth have deep grooves or they have a recent history of tooth decay.

Sealants work best when applied to tooth surfaces that are still cavity-free. They are a preventive measure, not a treatment for a tooth that already has a cavity, which is why an assessment during a routine examination is the best way to check candidacy. Your dentist will recommend sealants based on your cavity risk, tooth anatomy, and examination findings.

How Are Dental Sealants Applied?

Sealant application is quick and does not require removing any healthy tooth structure or local anaesthesia. The tooth surface is cleaned and dried, the sealant material is applied to the grooves, and a curing light sets it in place. The entire process usually takes only a few minutes per tooth and can often be done during a routine cleaning appointment.

If you're coming in for a routine check-up or cleaning, you can ask whether dental sealants are suitable for you. If you are a new patient, you can also ask about our Wellness Package, which includes a consultation, scaling and polishing, and fluoride treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is getting a dental sealant painful?

No. Sealant application does not require drilling, numbing, or removing any tooth structure, so most patients find it comfortable and straightforward.

How long do dental sealants last?

Dental sealants typically last several years with normal wear, though this varies by individual. Your dentist can check their condition at your regular check-up and reapply if needed.

Does insurance cover dental sealants?

Many corporate health plans and dental insurance plans include a preventive care allowance that may cover sealants. Coverage varies, so it is best to check with your provider.

Who should consider dental sealants?

Dental sealants are suitable for anyone prone to cavities, not only children and teenagers. They work best when applied to cavity-free tooth surfaces as a preventive measure, particularly on molars and premolars with deep grooves.
